<-- Week 5
Today at NLS:
Last day of Spring Break!
Nico elected to have Pajama Day.
Lucas and Nico wrote up questions about the Family Tree Project and sent them off.
We were relaxing so much that we appear not to have done Song of the Day. BUT, we did have Movie of the Day!! After the boys finished their morning work they got to watch Ice Age.
Today at NLS:
We got off to a slow start today so Nico could take his turn at the NLS Barber Shop.
Once we wrapped that up, the boys chose Song of the Day again, this time picking another video by OK Go, this one for the song Obsession. In the video more than 550 printers produce an ever-changing paper backdrop for the singers(!)
We did a bit more work on the Family Tree Project. Today we really enjoyed Grandpa Richard's story of ~7-year old Great Great Grandpa Dave Kleiman (born in Lithuania?) jumping into the harbor as the boat docked in the United States. And we were fascinated by the story of Great Great Grandpa Morris Rochberg leaving the Russian army to head to New Jersey in 1905.
Lucas helped us calculate that Nico and Lucas have eight "1G" (great) grandparents, sixteen 2G grandparents, thirty-two 3G grandparents, sixty-four 4G grandparents, and one hundred twenty eight 5G grandparents. So far we've read info on 7/8 of the 1Gs, 12/16 of the 2Gs, 6/32 of the 3Gs, 2/64 of the 4Gs, and 4/128 of the 5Gs. And we marveled at the idea that they are descended from 4,096 10Gs.
Recesses included soccer and bike riding, and in the afternoon Lucas had a playdate with Skylar!
And throughout the day we continued to enjoy the audio version of the Ralph S. Mouse books by Beverly Cleary.
Today at NLS:
The boys got to pick Song of the Day again! Today's choice was this incredible OK Go video of the song I Won't Let You Down.
We made a bit more progress on the Family Tree Project today -- we got to 5G! Four 5-great grandparents: Nico and Lucas' mommy's mommy's mommy's mommy's mommy's mommy's mommy and daddy (Barbara and Esteban) AND their mommy's mommy's mommy's mommy's mommy's daddy's mommy and daddy (Maria and Mariano).
Mommy took the boys out for a long morning recess of biking!
We started to learn how to play Boggle. Nico customized the board (see photo), so it looks like he's starting to get the hang of it : )
After school, we attempted our first at-home haircut. Lucas is now sporting a clean look. Nico is due up tomorrow. And Daddy has added "barber" to "elementary school teacher" on his growing list of professions that he feels very underqualified for.
Today at NLS:
The boys got to pick Song of the Day, so first choice was of course Old Town Road by Lil Nas X.
More progress on the Family Tree Project! Today we learned more about Tata's grandmother and grandfather, Tata's father's family, and Aba's great grandmother and great grandfather from Spain. We discovered that we now have three "3G" (Great Great Great grandparents) -- levels filled in: their mom's mom's mom's mom's parents, their dad's mom's dad's mom's parents, and their mom's dad's dad's mom's parents.
Really Big Numbers continues to be a hit. Today we learned that a 10 with 108 zeroes after it is called a quinquatrigintillion and that googol plex plex is a thing.
Indoor recess with Mr. Mark's Adventures to Fitness and then outdoor recess with soccer and mini basketball.
Nico had a playdate with Bryson and Lucas and Nico listened to more of Runaway Ralph.
Week 4 - Spring Break!! Today at NLS:
Our Song of the Day was Pride (In the Name of Love) by U2. We agreed that since it's spring break the boys get to choose Song of the Day tomorrow.
No distance learning from Oakhurst this week, so we're exploring some other topics. Today was day 1 of the NLS Family Tree Project!
Nico and Lucas LOVED hearing stories about their families from long ago. We saw a picture of the Sekuler family in Gomel, Belarus (Russia at the time) in 1909 before Great Great Grandma Sekuler traveled with Aunt Estelle (7) and Uncle Mac (4) to the United States to join Great Great Grandpa Sekuler, who was already there. And we read Abuelito Carlos' story, as told to Mommy, about his ill-fated trip to southern Chile, his fateful decision about a rock rumored to have magic powers, and his re-assignment to the Atacama Desert.
For math, the Really Big Numbers book from Grandpa Richard is a huge hit! We read through the first section, Lucas learned about the math of doubling in a family tree, and Nico has taken the author's challenge to try to figure out how he calculated that there are about 20,000 ways to arrange 3 colors on a tic tac toe board.
And a good game and toy day. Nico taught Lucas how to play Set! And we also finally completed the K'nex roller coaster that Nico got for his 7th birthday - very exciting!!
